Lecture Summer Term 2012

Lecture on Parallel Computing in summer term 2012

Group description

The Shared Research Group (SRG) on New Frontiers in High Performance Computing Exploiting Multicore and Coprocessor Technology is founded in the framework of the German Excellence Initiative by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in close collaboration and fundings by the industrial partner Hewlett-Packard (HP). The SRG addresses challenges and chances that arise from deployment of emerging hardware technologies in scientific and high performance computing. The work of the SRG creates an interface between academic research activities and the demands and expertise of a world technology leader.

The central goal of the SRG is to exploit the potential of emerging hardware architectures like multicore and manycore processors, graphics processing units (GPUs), coprocessors, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and specialized accelerators with respect to scientific applications in high performance computing. The essential part of research relies on development and adaptation of numerical methods and algorithms with respect to the hardware constraints like fine-grained parallelism, communication paths, bandwidth bottlenecks, memory hierarchy and granularity.
